Bourbon Inn Breakfast Secrets and Where You Can Try Them This Weekend

Will Bourbon Inn Breakfast Secrets be revealed this weekend? The countdown is on for the 12th Annual Gravy Cup, happening this Saturday, March 1, from 9 AM to Noon! It’s the ultimate showdown of biscuits and gravy, where some of the best cooks in the region bring their A-game to compete for two awards: the Grand Champion award from the official judges, and a People’s Choice award from the attendees.  And with a record-breaking crowd expected this year, one thing is certain: everybody is hungry for biscuits and gravy!

At the Louisville Bourbon Inn, we’re especially excited because our very own Allen Mitchell is stepping up to the plate, serving a Bourbon Inn breakfast favorite: his signature gravy that’s been years in the making. If you’ve ever stayed with us and had the pleasure of tasting his Bourbon Inn breakfast creations, you already know—this is the kind of comfort food that warms the soul.

But what makes Allen’s gravy stand out from the rest? We asked him for a sneak peek into his recipe, but he just smiled and shook his head. Some secrets aren’t meant to be shared. What he did share, however, is the story behind his love for cooking—and it’s one worth telling.

Cooking with True Love

Allen’s passion for food began when he was just a boy, spending summers with his grandmother, True Love Mitchell. Yes, that was her real name, and it fit her perfectly—because everything she made was infused with love, tradition, and a deep understanding of Southern cooking.

When Allen was young, he had to spend a lot of time indoors due to health reasons. Instead of letting him feel left out, True Love saw an opportunity. She invited him into the kitchen and handed him the most precious gift a cook can have—knowledge passed down through generations.

She didn’t teach him to follow recipes to the letter. Instead, she showed him how to listen to the ingredients, how to trust his instincts, and how to make a dish his own.

“The recipe is just the beginning,” she would say. “It’s what you do with it that makes it special.”

That lesson stuck with Allen, and over the years, he’s taken True Love’s family recipe for biscuits and gravy and added his own creative twist. The base remains the same—rich, creamy, and deeply flavorful—but he’s perfected every detail, adjusting ingredients and techniques to create something truly one-of-a-kind.

True Love’s Legacy, Served Hot This Saturday

Though True Love is no longer with us, her influence lives on in Allen’s cooking. This weekend, when he ladles up his famous gravy for Gravy Cup attendees, it won’t just be a dish—it’ll be a tribute to the woman who taught him to cook with his heart.

If you want to taste it for yourself, join us at The Gravy Cup this Saturday! It’s a fun, friendly competition with an incredible cause—supporting Boys and Girls Havenwhile celebrating one of the best Southern comfort foods out there.
